For centuries, the women of northern Ghana have harvested the nuts of the shea butter tree and processed them into a rich, nourishing oil that is used in cosmetics and skin care products around the world. This process, which is traditionally done by hand, is labor-intensive but an important source of income for women in the region.

Itegue Taitu Betul, founder of Addis Ababa (“New Flower”) in 1886. She ruled as Empress of Ethiopia from 1889 until 1913.

When we as Yatreda filmed the Taitu motion portraits, we had to choose between recreating an existing historical photo, or something fresh. So we decided to bring the Empress back to life with an original composition, unseen before. Our dear Menen captured her expressions, essence & style.
